“Who are you?” said the Caterpillar.

The Alice in Wonderland-esque theme I’ve chosen for this blog is not just because I look very much like Alice from Wonderland (blonde hair, wide wondering eyes, pouty lips), but also because my mind works in very much the same way as Lewis Carroll’s.  (And no, I’m not high on LSD.  Only imagination.  You can read the Bloggess’s book for that.)

I’m a dreamer and a schemer who believes almost exclusively in the impossible.  And until now, my mind has been impassible.  This blog is designed for us to see through to the mixed-up world that exists behind our eyes.  To see it, to embrace it, to roll around in it like a dog grinds its back into rotting filth.  Anything we encounter in the pink mush, we embrace.  It’s who we are, it’s what we do.  We are dreamers.  We are writers.  We are creators.  We are teachers, painters, poets, artists, entrepreneurs, explorers, lovers, fighters, sinners, saints, and all things above, around, and in-between.

I’m a writer, yes, but that’s not even the half of it.  I’m also a actress and a filmmaker, a traveler and a supernatural enthusiast.  I’m a cupcake eater and a yoga doll, a student, a daughter, a friend.  And of course, we’re all creators (we design our lives every day).  But I don’t like putting who I am into a neat little box tied up with a bow.  Nothing about life is neat.  We’re a mess, by nature.  Nature is a mess.  And it’s in that mad mess that wonders are born.  Who I am is messy, but I’m learning (slowly, but surely) to embrace the chaos and live moment-to-moment.

If you’re anything like me, often that moment is inside a daydream.  A retreat from reality to live in a place where anything is possible.  Wonderland, if you will.  Where Caterpillars smoke hookahs and ask perplexing questions about who we are, and Cheshire cats with sly grins remind us that “we’re all mad here.”  A place where one never grows up, where Hobbits fulfill prophecies, and where teenage boys with lightning scars have the power to vanquish the Dark Lord.  In Wonderland, I’m often on stage in front of the Academy giving my Oscar speech, my latest novel has a top spot on the New York Times bestseller list, or I’m simply ruminating on the meaning of life.  There’s no end to the unrealities that exist inside my head.

Welcome to a world of mystery and mayhem.  Where what is unreal is only not real because we haven’t thought it yet.  Welcome to the madness of Wonderland.  Allow me to introduce myself.  I am the Mad Catter.

And here’s my mad cat pal:

We’re all square pegs in this weird world.

Have a mad day.

Alex
